South African golf courses - Gary
Player Country Club
Situated
in Sun City, the Gary Player Country club is probably South Africa's
most well known golf course. This famous course, designed by Gary
Player, is host to the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge.
This immaculately kept golf course is a challenge for golfers of
all handicaps. Of the back markers the course measures 7000 meters
but the variety of tees makes it possible to shorten the course
to accommodate all level of players.
The
fairways, greens and rough consist of kikuyu grass. The kikuyu in
the rough takes on a specially daunting character. The rough swallows
your ball and the grass clings to the club head when attempting
to play out of the rough. A distinguishing feature on the course
is its putting greens. Strategically placed bunkers, swells and
mounds protect super slick clover shaped greens. Its signature hole
is the par five 9th with its island green.
